KiCAD Tutorial: Creating a simple Schematic

After opening KiCAD, click "Create new blank project".

Type "Hello World", and click "Save".

Click the Schematic Editor icon. You should see a screen like this:

Next, click "Place", then "Add Symbol". Type "555 timer" in the search bar, and select "NE555P".

Then add three US resistors. I chose US resistors because they are the most common schematic symbol that is used.

Next, add a single LED.

Now that we have placed all of the symbols, we can see that the 555 timer symbol is really not very easy to use as the pins are not in the right spots. The following video shows how to optimize the symbol.

The last symbol you will need is a battery.

Now that we have placed all of the symbols, we can see that the 555 timer symbol is really not very easy to use as the pins are not in the right spots. The following video shows how to optimize the symbol.

Now that the 555 timer symbol is optimized, we can proceed to optimize the location of the rest of the symbols.

Now we will choose our component values.

Finally, we will create the correct labels for each component.

Your first schematic is now finished! Next, we will create a PCB so that you can go ahead and actually build the circuit.
